Patty's approach to counseling

I approach counseling with an attitude of "do what works" and what works with one person may not work with another. Of course, to take that approach I must have many tools in my toolbox and over the years I have accumulated many, some you may have heard of and others probably not.

  • Cognitive Behavioral

  • Behavioral

  • NeuroLinguistic Programming

  • Ericksonian Hypnosis

  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprogramming (EMDR)

  • Habit Reversal Training

  • Exposure Response Prevention

  • Polyvagal

I "do therapy" like I cook.  My family would tell you that some of our best main courses have been what I fondly call "inventions".  I begin making one dish and end up with something entirely different.  It's the same way with therapy.  I have one technique in mind and often end up combining techniques as I observe a client's responses. I prefer to cook without a recipe and I prefer to do therapy without instructions.  I know my therapy ingredients and I like to create what works for each person.

Together we will focus on the present and future through finding solutions, brainstorming new strategies and trying on new behaviors to help you make the changes you desire.  Of course, sometimes we have to explore the past to get where you want to be but we don't stay in the past.

My ideal clients are those who come for counseling because they want to, not because they feel pressured by others.  People who enjoy being my clients are those who value being spoken to honestly, who appreciate being challenged to hear the hard things, who value a compassionate listener, and who value feeling soothed through my calm and accepting presence.  My ideal clients demonstrate commitment to the counseling process by regular attendance, being timely to appointments, following through on homework assignments and respecting our financial agreement.

We all face challenges not only as individuals but within our families, friendships, work lives and day to day functioning.  I bring my life experience, my clinical experience and most of all, my presence, who I am as a person, to be there for my clients at each session.  I'd like to be present for YOU.
