Manage stress in a different and fulfilling way

Yes, there is such a thing as good stress.  Being nervous before your piano recital is good stress. Anticipating childbirth is good stress. Deciding which job offer to take is good stress.  Traveling home to care for an aging parent…that may not be good stress.  Nor is talking to computer support for two hours.

Interestingly enough, both good and bad stress can be managed in the same ways.

  • Stepping away from a situation and looking at a bigger picture of what’s happening.

  • Learning yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong

  • Meditation

  • Pampering yourself with massage and spa services (that’s for men too)

  • Movie night

  • Getting a babysitter

  • Easing up on your need to be perfect

  • Letting go of grudges

  • Walking, running, hiking or whatever you enjoy doing outdoors

  • Giving yourself permission to just goof around and have fun

  • Completing one project you’ve been working on for a long time…or deciding you no longer have an interest in it and throwing it away or donating what remains undone

  • Coloring

  • Taking a hike with your camera

  • Watching a TV show you’ve been curious about

  • Gardening

You get the idea … the sky is the limit.

Stress management isn’t about fancy techniques or regular counseling sessions.  It’s about doing … or not doing, doing more of …. or less of.  It’s about giving yourself permission to take five minutes or five hours and give your body and mind a rest.

It’s easy to say and not so easy to do.  But it’s certainly worth the commitment.
